So we booted his MacBook in target mode and used the Mavericks installation as start volume for a Mac Pro (Early 2008). welcome back. I am happy to say my external monitor once again works, and I have had no re-boots or black screens (knock on wood!) in the past 24 hours. Started up in Safe Mode, but only saw a very dim "something" appear on the screen of my 2006 MacBookPro 1.1.

I am hoping to fix this at home. There is no DIY fix for a bad GPU other than to replace the entire logic board. Do you think this problem might have been caused by recently installing fluux (that program that dims the blue light on your computer at night)? The first option, reset the SMC, did the trick.
